Dear Oak Parents and Students,

Welcome back to a new year at Oak School, and a special welcome to all of Oak’s new students and parents!  There are 100 new students at Oak this year including our new kindergarten students.  A new kindergarten class has been added to accommodate new students - we now have four kindergartens!

All of our students who were with us in Grades 2-5 last year will receive within the next few days reports showing results of their performance on California’s STAR test.  If you have questions or concerns, please give me a call or talk to your child’s teacher.  As a group our students performed very well on the tests and continued to improve.  Our average scores were among the highest in the county and state. I was impressed with the consistency between grades and the progressive improvement as the students move up through the grades.  This shows good communication and coordination among teachers and consistent effort by the students.  Congratulations to our students and teachers for their great work!

As you look around the campus you will notice a new school sign in the front of the school, new landscaping near the kindergarten, and a new edible garden.  These are visible products of our PTA’s continuing support of Oak School.  Oak’s 6th Grade will participate in an exciting new technology program this year, due in large measure to the support of LAEF, PTA, parents, and extra effort from the teachers.

One of the main events in the life of Oak School this year will be the election on November 7.  The LASD School Board has decided to ask the voters for reauthorization of the existing parcel tax.   If approved this will continue for the next four years a $7 M source of school district income.  These funds are essential to continue Oak’s program.   Our PTA and presumably many of you will be involved in this election.  This involvement will be crucial.

After a summer’s rest, it’s time to see some learning happening at Oak School.  Welcome back!
