Kindergarten News: March 2008
Dear Families,
March was a fun and busy month in Kindergarten! You probably heard about Lyle the crocodile who visited us nightly for a while. We shared many of his adventures through stories and poetry, and we celebrated his birthday on March 17th. He left posters to record who knows their address and phone number - thank you for helping your child learn this information. We also made crocodile puppets and performed puppet shows for our classmates.
In math, we have been working on number combinations using a variety of different manipulatives. Children are moving along at their own pace and their math folders will come home in their Thursday Envelopes each time they finish a new number sum. As always we count and compare more than and less than all the time, sometimes recording and sometimes not. We have also improved our estimation skills throughout the year, with the Star of the Week’s Estimation Jar.
The children continue to be given many opportunities to write including birthday cards to Lyle and fan mail to each other. Journal writing is becomming more independent as children write their own words using phonetic spelling. We also encourage a finger space between words and punctuation at the end of a sentence. Our writing center is always a popular choice at choosing time. We have been doing many activities with the letter of the week.
The Take Home book program is going well - we appreciate your participation at home. The more times your child can practice reading his/her book, the better! It is also a great idea to talk with your child about the story after reading it, to help work on memory and comprehension skills.
Of course our Weather play was the highlight of our weather unit! We are so proud of the children - I’m sure you were too. This month in science we will be using our “scientist eyes”‚ to observe and record changes in the wheat grass we planted this week, and we are presently watching for signs of life from our silkworm eggs. We have also just begun our farm unit which teaches us about a variety of different farm animals, all leading up to our favorite field trip of the year- Hidden Villa Farm.
The District Art Show is this week from April 4th to 6th at the Hillview Community Center. The Kindergarten classes have made beautiful quilts about March weather. We strongly encourage you all to visit the art show this weekend - it’s really a beautiful thing to see.
