Kindergarten Notes:
Monthly Newsletter
Kindergarten Communication
A Kindergarten newsletter will be sent home at the end of each month. The newsletter will discuss current projects,
curriculum areas and special events of the Kindergarten class as well as future activities. Please use this as an
opportunity to review school accomplishments and share in your child’s kindergarten adventures. We have a Kindergarten
page on the Oak web site.
Notes/Work going Home
The Kindergarten class will bring home “weekly envelopes” on Thursdays. Kindergarten News, Notes from Oak, kindergarten work, etc. will be included in the envelopes. Please return the empty envelope to school with your child on Fridays, so that it may be used the following week. Homework activities will be explained and expanded as the year progresses.
Library
Kindergarten children will check out books from our school library on Mondays. Children should return their books to our class library box by the following Friday. This is excellent practice for the time they will have to return homework in future grades. Each child will have a reusable library envelope for their book, with library rules and procedures written on it.
Birthday Celebrations
We will celebrate this special day with a variety of activities in the classroom. Due to numerous allergies, no birthday treats will be served. Please do not send toys or party favors either. (This is a new school policy at Oak.) We will have a week of “Unbirthday” celebrations in May for children with summer birthdays.
Early Dismissal
On Field Trip days, both classes will come to school in the morning, with no change for AM Kindergarten. The PM class will come to school from 8:15 - 11:35 am. YMCA Kid’s Place will be open in the afternoon to accommodate those enrolled. Please see the Kindergarten Alternative Schedule for other changes throughout the year.
Conferences
There will be scheduled conferences with parents in November and at the end of the year. Additional conferences can be requested as the need arises. Please phone, email or write a note if you have a concern about your child.
Sharing
If your child has a special treasure he/she would like to show and tell about, it can be brought in on Fridays. Please encourage your child to participate and help by reviewing information about the object so they have at least three things to say about it. Apporopriate sharing objects could be things found in nature, something a child made, or a special event in a child's life (eg. a lost tooth, a visiting relative, etc) Sharing is not compulsory but encouraged. No toys please.
Other Important Stuff
- Please put your child’s name on anything that they bring to school that can be separated from their body
(ie. sweaters, hats, backpacks, etc.).
- Your child needs a snack every day - a drink and something that doesn’t take too long to eat. Our time for snack and outdoors
is limited and they want to get on and play! Please remember, Kindergarten is a nut free zone. No nuts, peanut butter, or other
peanut products may be sent to school.
- Please remember how much we depend on your volunteer time and come ready to have a great time! You are very important to our program
so if you can’t come, please try to find a substitute and inform the teacher.
- Remember that Kindergarten is often a place of messy projects and a sandy or muddy playground. We have the children wear
paint smocks and wash hands a lot but inevitably that white sweatshirt from Grandma will come into contact with the
black paint somehow - please be understanding! We do our best!
Please pick up your child promptly. If you’re going to be late, please call the office so we can let your child know what
to expect. If your child changes her/his usual routine for going home, we must have a note so we can help him or her find the way.
- Rest is always important for all of us but especially for these growing Kinders. Please try to avoid late nights during the week! A good night’s sleep, a nourishing breakfast, and a relaxed trip to school really make for a better day!
