Kindergarten News: February 2008

Dear Families,

Even though February was a short month, it was filled with many exciting activities! The children continue to work hard and are learning so much. In Math, we continue counting, estimating, and making varied number sentences. Our cooking projects and other measuring activities offer good math practice and we have also been practicing writing numbers.

The children are working on developing writing skills in a number of ways. Some things that may come home are Fan Mail letters, Read and Write the Room lists, Dictionary Books, and cards and notes. As we practice writing, we are encouraging the children to use lower case letters where appropriate, such as in their names. Some time spent at home practicing would be beneficial. In class, we write whole group stories, daily diary pages, and do a variety of sentence building activities.

Our winter weather has given us the opportunity to observe changes in the weather and our environment. We will be learning about different types of clouds and will continue our weather study throughout the year.

We had a very exciting “100 Day” celebration. The children counted to 100 many, many times. The final total on the Penny Drive for our classrooms was about $145.00 - that’s over 14,500 pennies, each counted by hand! We have donated the money to Pennies For Peace, a program that donates school supplies to schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. While a penny isn’t worth much in our country, in these countries a single penny will buy a new pencil. So just imagine how many wonderful things our donation will make possible!

Valentine’s Day was a very special day in Kindergarten. The children enjoyed sharing special valentines with their friends, families, and 3rd Grade Buddies. The holiday provided many fun opportunities for reading, writing, and art.

You rmay have noticed the Lunar New Year decorations in our classrooms. We have been learning about how different cultures celebrate this important holiday. The children enjoyed making bright and colorful chopstick dragons.

We have also been reading and learning a bit about our nation’s presidents, specifically George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

On Friday, February 29th we celebrated Read Across America Day in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Our Third Grade Buddies came to see us and we had a special visit from The Cat in the Hat, who read us a Dr. Seuss book.

In March, we are being visited by our favorite green friend, Lyle the Crocodile. You will probably hear about him. Lyle will asked the children to tell their teacher their address and phone number! This is good incentive for your child to learn this important information. Please work on it at home during the month.

We will also begin our Farm unit in March, always a favorite. This unit will culminate with our field trip to Hidden Villa Farm on Wednesday, May 7th (for Room 1) and Thursday, May 8th (for Room 2).

We do not have report cards in Kindergarten, as older grades do. There will be an end-of-year conference for each Kindergarten child in the late spring. We will contact parents and conference as the need arises. If you have specific concerns about your child’s progress, please let us know. We can schedule a conference now if you wish.

As class writing journals are finished, they will be sent home for you to enjoy with your child. Please be sure to save these, as we will be requesting their return in May.

A general reminder: Please make sure your children come to school wearing appropriate footwear. The children are very active every day (not just P.E. day) and so shoes like flip flops, high heels or crocks are not appropriate or safe. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Over the next few weeks we will be talking and reading about different jobs/careers that people do or have. If you have a job that you think the Kindergarten would be interested in hearing about, and have the time to come in and tell us about it, we’d love to know. A 10-15 minute presentation is all we would need - please let us know and we can schedule a time. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Your Kindergarten Teachers
Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. McClain, Mrs. Nolan & Mrs. Terry
