Emergency Preparedness:
Information for Parents:
- All classrooms meet the "Field Act" (earthquake safety) construction standards.
- All District employees and students are instructed regularly in emergency procedures.
- All schools in the Los Altos School District maintain an Emergency Preparedness Plan (“EPP”) which is reviewd and updated annually.
- To ensure that Oak students and staff know what to do when a disaster occurs, fire drills and earthquake drills are practiced during the school year.
- Students will only be released to individuals listed on your child's emergency information. Be sure to update your child's emergency sheet during the
school year if there are any changes.
In an emergency at Oak:
- Listen to radio — Do Not telephone the school. Tune to 530 AM, the emergency broadcasting station for the city of Los Altos.
- Earthquake — check your home for gas or water leaks, then go to school if you can.
- Fire or gas leak — check radio, students will be escorted to Loyola School (770 Berry Avenue).
- Intruder on campus — go to Loyola School (770 Berry Avenue); don't call in to office or your student's cell (keep lines free for police)
Picking your child up in an emergency situation:
- In accordance with school board regulations, if an emergency occurs, students will remain at school under the supervision of
school personnel until the school principal has given the dismissal order.
- No student will be dismissed from the school unless a parent or designated adult
takes custody of him/her during the release process. A child will only be allowed to leave with another person on the student's emergency information data sheet. Be sure to update your child's emergency sheet during the
school year if there are any changes.
- DON'T BLOCK emergency vehicles. The school must have open access for emergency equipment and vehicles. Walk if possible. Keep cars away from campus and parking lot, especially the exits.
- When you arrive at the school to pick up your child, please try to remain calm.
- It will be critical that parents do not come onto the field or blacktop. The school will need to maintain a safe and secure environment.
Go to the designated check out station.
- Please do not take any children without first getting them properly released. It is critical that the school maintains an accurate record of students being picked up by authorized adults.
- After a severe emergency, the school principal may need parents willing to help. If you are able, please volunteer to help.
Preparing your Child for Emergencies:
Each Oak family is encouraged to do some preplanning, to hold earthquake & fire drills, and to decide where members of the family should meet if they are separated. Have your child check our FEMA for kids, a resource for kids to learn about disaster preparedness.
Make sure your student has the following on a card in their backpack:
- LAPD Emergency Alternate to 911 is (650) 947-2779
(use this number from a cell phone instead of 911 — it's quicker — program it in cell phones)
- Out-of-town contact phone numbers (family or friends) in case local phone lines are not available.
- Your home, work and cell numbers in case he/she forgets them due to stress.
- Friends' or neighbors' numbers in case you aren't available. These should be numbers included on the child's emergency information held in the school office.
