- March 4th, 2008, 7 pm, Oak School Multipurpose Room: "Nature Deficient Disorder in Kids and How to Cure it", Diane Gordon, Director of Children and Nature Programs, Hooked on Nature
Does your child have “Nature Deficit Disorder?” How is it impacting his/her learning and test scores?
Children’s alienation from nature has been linked to attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity, stress, depression and anxiety disorders, as well as childhood obesity. Connecting with the natural world can raise students’ test scores, reduce absenteeism, and improve cognitive functioning. Schools that use outdoor classrooms and other methods of direct-experience learning produce students with improved standardized test scores and grade-point averages and enhanced skills in problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making. Come learn more about Nature Deficit Disorder, and what parents can do about it.
Diane Gordon is the Director of Children and Nature Programs for Hooked on Nature, a non-profit, national movement to help adults help kids. She has been featured with Richard Louv on the call-in radio program, “Childhood Matters.” She is a long time educator and children’s advocate who has also developed programs for parent literacy and parenting teens. She received her teaching credentials at Whitelands College, London University.
